What is a VET course?

VET courses offer valuable knowledge and skills applicable to various industries and students who complete vocational education and training (VET) can earn credits that count towards achieving the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE). Certain VET courses also facilitate easier access to additional educational pathways, such as university programs.

Expectations of VET students

When considering a VET course, students are advised of the following expectations:

  • VET courses take place at designated training centres, and it is up to families to arrange transportation to and from the location.
  • 100% student attendance is expected 1 day a week. Trainers place high importance on being dependable and punctual.
  • Staying on top of schoolwork is important through time management, organisation and working closely with subject teachers and VET Coordinator are key to doing well.

Workplace Learning

Workplace learning provides students with the chance to experience the world of work, helping them explore career options and develop essential employability skills. It includes:

Structured Work Placements is usually for students who are studying a VET course with workplace requirements.

Work Experience is a short-term placement, usually in the school holidays, where students are exposed to their potential career pathways.

Before participating in any form of workplace learning, students must complete the WorkStart WHS (Work Health and Safety) modules available on Plink. The Plink Portal is located via EdPass

Once complete students need to send the completed Certificate to the VET email (dl.0823.vet@schools.sa.edu.au).

The Workplace Learning Agreement form, including the WHS checklist, is available via the link below. This form must be completed and signed by all parties and submitted to the VET Coordinator at least one week before commencing workplace learning to allow for processing.

For some Workplace Learning placements, additional paperwork may be required. Information for these requirements is outlined

VET enrolment process

VET Coordinators will submit applications for all VET courses on behalf of students using an online system known as VETRO (VET Readiness Orientation).

HSC school students will submit application through the HSC VET coordinator.

For regional students, applications are to be submitted through their home school VET coordinator.

Application Process and Requirements for VET enrolment:

  1. Proof of Industry Exposure Evidence:
When applying, students are required to show proof of industry exposure in the area they are interested in. This is usually through work experience or participation in “come and try” or “immersion sessions”, but can also include volunteering or paid employment. For more information, please see Guide for Evidence of Completed VET
  2. Complete an expression of Interest Form
Applications are usually submitted during Term 3 and need to be submitted to the VET coordinator using the Expression of Interest form.
    Please complete all three sections:
    – Section 1 – Student Details
    – Section 2 – Parent/Caregiver Details
    – Section 3 – VET Coordinator Details
  3. Interview and Literacy & Numeracy Assessment:
Once students have submitted their Expression of Interest form, applicants are invited to attend an interview and complete a Language, Literacy, and Numeracy (LLN) Assessment to help ensure their individual learning needs are supported or to determine whether they are ready to commence the course.
To prepare, students can practice using the following resource:
    CSPA Practice Material
  4. Create a Unique Student Identifier (USI)
Students will need to create a Unique Student Identifier (USI), which is a reference number for individuals undertaking VET courses and helps keep a secure online record of a student’s nationally recognised training. This can be done here.
  5. Training Provider Enrolment Form
Training providers will have their own enrolment forms to be completed and submitted as part of the enrolment process once the above steps have been completed and the enrolment accepted.

School Based Apprenticeships & Traineeships Career

Students in Years 10, 11, or 12 have the option to start a part-time, school-based apprenticeship or traineeship while still attending school. This enables them to work towards completing the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE) while beginning their apprenticeship or traineeship. After finishing Year 12 (Stage 2), they can transition directly into the workforce. The minimum work requirement for these apprenticeships or traineeships is one day per week. However, in Year 12, if students have completed all mandatory SACE components, they can engage in a Flexible Apprenticeship/Traineeship, allowing for more workdays per week to be arranged.

Students typically secure their own host employer through work experience or by completing a certificate course. Once a host company agrees to take them on as an apprentice or trainee, students must collaborate with the employer to fill out a pre-endorsement form.
