AFL Girls Academy

The AFL Girls Academy runs successfully as a specialist sport for girls from Years 8-11 and provides an introduction to the game of Aussie Rules Football through a fun, engaging and challenging program. As one of the most popular sports among girls in Australia, Aussie Rules Football continues to grow in participation at the youth level. Not only does it offer tremendous health benefits, it also teaches positive life lessons by instilling a sense of teamwork and collaboration. The skills and fitness that result from playing Aussie Rules Football are a great benefit for girls at any age. Now that it is gaining ground at the professional level across Australia, it is inspiring many girls to pick up a ball and hit the field.

This academy, which is not available in most schools, offers a structured program and includes participation in the 6-week Crows Legend program led by the Women’s Crows. The practical component of the course concentrates on fitness components specific to Aussie Rules Football, executing game skills, pre-training activities and fitness testing. Girls compete in the AFL 9s competition as part of the course. The theory component is aligned with the Australian Curriculum framework and includes a focus on the health benefits of physical activity, nutritious food and positive lifestyle, an investigation of the impact of drugs and alcohol, as well as mental health, wellbeing, safety and relationships. Students are also able to complete a basic football umpiring course and gain a certificate.

Participation in the AFL Girls’ Academy can provide students with:

  • 10 SACE credits towards Stage 1 Integrated Learning
  • A pathway into Certificate II Sport and Recreation
  • Evidence towards completion of Stage 1 and Stage 2 Sports Studies
  • Evidence toward completion of Stage 1 and Stage 2 Physical Education

Participating in sports is a great way to maintain a fit and healthy life and to make new friends.

There are many opportunities for involvement in a range of sports. This includes our annual Athletics Day, held in Term 1.This is a whole school event where participation in athletic and novelty events earns House points. It’s great fun for serious and novice athletes alike.

Each year we have a number of teams who compete in after school sports competitions. The sports do vary, but usually include netball, basketball and badminton.

Participating in school extra-curricular programs allows students to develop strong relationships with their peers and a stronger sense of belonging to the school community.

Hamilton Secondary College offers a number of student clubs and interest groups based on current and prospective student feedback. The extra-curricular club program supports our school’s commitment to students’ well-being by allowing them to gain valuable life skills, raising achievement levels, and fostering school values of respect and excellence.

Students involved have opportunities to build on their collaboration and communication skills, as well as their creative and critical thinking skills, all of which are vital skills needed for them to be successful learners.

Clubs will be supervised and mentored by school staff members.
